If you're a fan of fast-paced high-concept action thrillers - Michael Crichton, Tom Clancy, Matthew Reilly - you'll love this.

Phase Four is part techno thriller, part adventure story, part conspiracy theory - and all action all the way.

The plot...
When a classified military convoy transporting nerve gas is hijacked in the Nevada desert by a group of Middle Eastern terrorists, Homeland Security investigator Matthew Drake is assigned to put the suspects under surveillance.

But when the gas is released inside a luxury high-rise hotel in an apparent attempt to assassinate the President, Drake realizes - too late - that the hijackers weren't terrorists, the convoy wasn't carrying nerve gas, and something is very wrong in Washington D.C.

Now mobs are rioting in the Bay Area and panic is spreading across California at a frightening speed, threatening to engulf the entire country.

On the run with disgraced CIA surveillance technician Gena Hahn, Drake struggles to contain a sinister plan to achieve total control over the human mind.

"Government conspiracy, political intrigue, action, thrills, and psychedelic horror - this book has a little tantalizing piece of everything." The Troubled Scribe

From the author...
"Phase Four is a combination of spy novel, apocalyptic disaster story and political conspiracy thriller.

"It will appeal to conspiracy buffs, anti-New World Order types, and fans of 24 and The X Files.

"It also has some similarities with zombie novels."

About the author... Gary Carson was famous in the third grade for writing a series of grisly monster stories he pecked out on a typewriter and read in front of the class.

In college, he lost his edge for a while and wrote dull, literary short stories and poetry that appeared in various campus magazines and other bird-cage liners.

Later, he got back on track by dropping out and writing features for The Westport Trucker, an underground newspaper that ran headlines like "WHO STOLE JFK'S BRAIN?"

After spells as a programmer, system administrator, web developer and general IT monkey in Kansas City and San Francisco, he later worked in Reno, Nevada - the land of legalized prostitution, quickee divorces, toxic waste dumps and the giant radioactive tarantula.

Currently, he's living in Rolla, Mo., writing and waiting for the system to collapse.

I'm sorry to say the book goes on far to long & in my opinion fails to reach it's maximum potential in the plot. I didn't find the story boring but in places tedious & hard to believe. That a faction of our government could think of such an ill conceived plot without the advisers telling them the obvious drawbacks seemed unbelievable.

Much was made of the virus almost being sentient but though it's hinted at this part of the plot is left on the cutting room floor. The characters are good they talk like they are supposed to & are intelligent like Scientists should be.

All in all I felt the author may have not outlined this plot for better writing as it seemed sometimes to be all over the place.

Phase Four Gary Carson 9781478265948 Books Reviews

I selected the book at random. Not a book I would normally read but I did enjoy it. Sure makes one think about what the future holds.....if it does come to reality, sure glad I won't be around to see it.
Conceptually a good story. Too much detail on the effects of the chemical agent. I skipped the repetitive sections repeating the lizards, bats, etc. amazing how people continued to get out of trouble. Worth the read. The whole New World Order focus was a tad scary, but the ending was satisfying.
Fast paced and well written. I did find the premise a bit over the top (not to mention depressing), but that didn't really detract from the book itself. The characters were well developed, the good guys as well as the villains. I did find some sections could have been tightened, but overall this was an enjoyable read.
It was difficult to put this book down to get real work done. The story is definitely something I could see the current administration (Obama) trying to pull off. Everyone who has half a brain knows Obama is a puppet for a group of business and political traitors hell bent on destroying America. This book lays out a framework that I could see these traitors following. Very scary.....
I am not too much into government plots but the virus plot presented hear is scarily plausible. No happy endings here but thank god - no zombies! The main character is realistic and honest. I was a bit confused sometimes as to who was talking/thinking. Wished there had been more definition but fast paced and kept me wanting to see what would happen next!
Book could have been written better. Story line didn't make sense and I couldn't get to know any of the characters in it so every time someone died I didn't care. I want to read a book that I can get into and get to know the characters. I want to feel like I am there and experiencing It myself. This book took me awhile to read. And disappointed me. But at least it was free so I didn't waste any money on it.
The story was very interesting, and I liked all the alternating viewpoints. However, there were three main things I didn't like...
*SPOILERS*
*SPOILERS*
*DO NOT READ*
The first thing was Chertok's death. I felt that it was a bit anticlimactic and unexciting, considering he was one of the main opposing forces up until that point. Secondly, Drake's reaction - or should I say lack thereof - concerning his wife's death was disappointing. He heard that Nastya had been "head blown off" EXECUTED, and yet Drake didn't really have much of an emotional response. And finally, I just really disliked the fact that Gena and Drake wound up together. They really couldn't stand each other, and their past relationship wasn't too great either, so why put them together at all??? NO!! Nevertheless, I did like the ending, and the writing was fantastic. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about end of the world/government conspiracies.
