Tess Johnson has it all her handsome photographer husband Beau, a thriving business, and a newly discovered pregnancy. When Beau accepts an overseas photography assignment, Tess decides to wait to reveal her secret--only she's never given the chance. Beau's helicopter crashes in the desert.

As I sat down to write this review, I was still overcome with emotion. I read this book in two evenings. The last evening I was clutching my IPad, tears streaming down my face, until past midnight. I couldn't put it down. I needed to be with Tess until the end.There's so much I want to tell readers, but so little I want to give away. From the first page, we are thrown into Tess Johnson's life, a vibrant woman who has just found out she's pregnant and soon discovers her husband is presumed dead. She fights so hard to hold onto him, refusing to believe he's gone.
The reader knows he's alive and trying to get back to her, but it's her desperation and heartache driving the story. Her husband, Beau, is in a foreign land, facing challenges he can only begin to understand. The family he encounters there deserves freedom, and I felt for them and their struggles. He survived a helicopter crash, but can he survive the escape to freedom?
My heart ached through every phase of Tess's grieving process. Two friends stuck with her through everything: Kevin, Beau's best friend, and Alice, her co-worker and best friend. Their mutual affection brings them together, ultimately in a way they weren't expecting. A new friend, a potential client named Louie, enters the picture and helps Tess move forward.
The ending is exhilarating and heartbreaking. We journey through Beau's trek home and Tess coming to grips with reality to then be thrust into them finding their way back together. The results are not cookie cutter or expected. No simple running into his arms.
I thought that's what I wanted, but Melissa Foster crafts such a fine story woven around people we can relate to and care about, that you trust where she takes you.
Every reader defines a good book differently. But if you rate yours based on memorable characters who pull you into the pages with them, like I do... this is the book for you.

Once I started reading the book, I had to finish it to see what happened. Unfortunately, there were pages and pages of not much happening. When reading an actual book, I tend to read ahead to the back pages, and if I had done so with this one, most likely would not have read the rest of it.
Much as I tried to care about the characters, the closer to the end of the story I got, the less impressed I was with any of them. In the final section, the reaction of the male lead to the situation was completely ridiculous, and didn't hold up to his wife's portrayal of him as a caring, sensitive individual.
If you enjoy depressing stories, you might like this one. As you can see, I did not. To each his own.
I normally don't write reviews as I dont like to criticize other people's work, but this book disappointed me so much I felt compelled to write one. I really wanted to like this book & I did, at first. It all fell apart for me about 3/4 of the way through, about the time Beau came home. His friend Kevin was an idiot for agreeing not to tell Tess her "dead" husband was in fact alive & coming home. He also failed to mention to his best friend that his wife was pregnant & it was obviously his baby. I could've gotten over that but it just seemed to get worse from there. There was an awful lot of tragedy crammed into this book & again, I could've gotten past that as well, but Beau's response to & handling of everything just turned me off emotionally. I get the guy went through hell & back to get home to his wife, but he gave up on her awfully fast for a man that supposedly loved her so much. He acted like a complete jackass, to be quite honest. I also felt like a whole lot of his conflict could've been lessened had any of the characters actually communicated w him & explained that the baby was his, that even after everyone else (including his parents!) had accepted he was gone, Tess kept hope he would come back, to the point everyone thought she was losing her mind. Then, there was Louie. The poor guy had been through enough heartache after losing his fiancee in the past & after hearing about Tess, all he wants to do is see her one more time to say goodbye. Instead, Beau beats the crap out of him at the hospital & you never hear anything else about him. Alot of details weren't tied up very well (or at all), there was alot of choppiness, & the whole thing had turned into a train wreck by the time the book was over. I would not read again nor would I recommend to anyone.
